Hello, I'm Sophia.

I am a ceramic artist, educator, researcher and Registered Midwife based in Adelaide, and clay has been at the centre of my life for more than twenty years.

My journey with ceramics began at the University of South Australia, where I completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts with First Class Honours before undertaking a PhD exploring the therapeutic and metaphorical qualities of working with clay. Since then, I have exhibited throughout Australia, completed a Ceramics Associateship at the JamFactory, undertaken artist residencies, written for arts publications, and spent many years developing my own studio practice.

Alongside my work as an artist, I am also a Registered Midwife and university educator. These seemingly different paths are connected by a shared interest in people, learning, creativity and care. Over the past two decades I have taught art history, design history and theory, research methods, ceramics, wheel throwing and midwifery, working with students from diverse backgrounds, ages and levels of experience.

What continues to fascinate me about clay is its ability to slow us down and reconnect us with ourselves. In both my artistic practice and my doctoral research, I became interested in the way making with clay can support reflection, confidence, self-expression and wellbeing. It is a material that asks us to pay attention, embrace imperfection and learn through doing.

My classes are intentionally small, with one-on-one or one-on-two tuition, allowing plenty of individual guidance and support. Whether you are a complete beginner, looking to refine your skills, or simply seeking a creative pause from a busy life, I aim to create a welcoming and encouraging environment where you can learn at your own pace and enjoy the process of making.

For me, pottery is about much more than producing beautiful objects. It is about curiosity, connection, growth and the simple pleasure of transforming a lump of clay into something uniquely your own.
